The hip hike shows how well the pelvis can move up toward the ribs from side to side, which gives an indication of deep trunk muscle activation.
To perform this assessment:
- From a lying position, keep arms hang at sides (you can place hands on hips to help feel the motion as well)
- Bring the left side of th pelvis as close to the ribs as possible, hold for a second
- Repeat on other side and compare the motion between sides
