Tactical training is typically associated with training only for the military or ‘first responders’. While it is true that the military and first responders do (or should be) using a systematic tactical training process, that association alone would be a massive disservice to the processes overall effectiveness as well as anyone who wishes to train for enhanced mental and physical performance.
“Tactical” can be defined as ‘engaging in a procedure designed to achieve an end, an aim, or a goal; characterized by using skill, resourcefulness, and ingenuity’.
Over the last few decades, strength/functional training has gone through numerous evolutions. Starting with sensorimotor (i.e., instability) training in the late 1990’s, the focus was on enhancing the ability of the ‘core’ and stabilizing muscles to better transfer force with the theory of reducing the risk of injury.
Following this trend and adding to it in the pre-2010’s, came the “CrossFit” training approach. This revolutionized the strength training industry with the utilization of multiple forms of training including, gymnastics, Olympic lifts, powerlifting, and the use of odd objects (i.e., DBs, KBs, elastic bands, etc.).
Fast-forward another decade, mid-to-late 2010’s, and tactical training emerges. On it’s surface, it sounds similar to the CrossFit approach, using many modalities of training. However, it goes far beyond, which is why it is the next level and trend in the strength/functional training world.
A good tactical training process provides the following benefits:
- Specific and integrated training for the mental, cognitive, emotional, and physical aspects of the participant
- Specific focus on both injury prevention and performance enhancement simultaneously
- Mental and physical stress management tactics embedded into the programming
- Primary outcomes of consistently enhancing adaptability, resiliency, and sustainability
In this day and age, and with the increase in mental health related conditions such as depression, anxiety, drug, alcohol, and domestic abuse added to physical health conditions like musculoskeletal injuries, compromised immune system, and heart disease, a systematic Tactical Training process is needed more than ever.
